The majority of William Jewell College students learn about issues related to justice and sustainability through Level II of the Core Curriculum. Courses in all four categories of Level II include significant justice and sustainability themes. The Center sponsors concentrated events where lessons of justice and sustainability are learned in short-term sessions. Concentrated events include September Seminars, Teach-Ins, and one-day Symposia/Workshops.

Local Action Projects (LAPs) are sponsored by the Center in collaboration with other campus and non-campus organizations. LAPs …

  • relate to the Jewell campus, Liberty, or the KC metropolitan region
  • allow students, faculty, and staff to engage in work that directly relates to issues justice and/or sustainability.
  • allow the campus to plan for work as well as respond to immediate situations

Projects for Justice and Sustainability is an annual competition sponsored by the Center for student-developed and student-executed projects. The grant program allows students an opportunity to develop, formally propose, receive funding for, and conduct research/action projects related to issues of justice and/or sustainability.

4-Year Developmental Model
Jewell prepares students to tackle complex problems. Throughout your four-year experience, you will be expected to learn (about the issues that matter), practice (to make a difference), and partner (with the community and the world). Our students don’t get to sit back and relax. We expect them to dive in.

1st Year – “Engaging the Self”

  • Orientation Weekend: The Center provides learning resources to support the Service Project embedded in Orientation Weekend.
  • The Center provides a service opportunity for each Orientation Mentor Group to engage in throughout the first weeks of the year, as the first-year students are getting settled in.
  • First-year students are invited right at the beginning to get involved in concentrated learning events and in the local action projects offered throughout the four years of the Jewell experience.
  • Other service opportunities include Serve & Celebrate; Service-mission trips during fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks; Annual Summit; Matthew 25, and ACT-In Service Road Trips.

2nd Year – “Serving Our Community”

  • A significant component of the Sophomore-Year Experience (SYE) is both community service and service learning. SYE launches sophomores into class-led service projects that involve participation and support from the larger campus community.
  • Level II of the Core Curriculum includes significant justice themes and learning as well as concentrated learning events
  • Serve & Celebrate (sophomores are expected to lead and participate)
  • Continued involvement in Local Action Projects, Service-mission trips, Justice Summit, Matthew 25, and ACT-In Road Trips

3rd Year – “Engaging Our World”

  • Projects for Justice and Sustainability are not limited to students in their junior year but we foresee this as a time when students will integrate the experiences and learning they have had thus far to apply for a project.
  • Students provide significant leadership in concentrated learning events and in Local Action Projects, Serve & Celebrate, Service-mission trips, Justice Summit, Matthew 25, and ACT-In Road Trips.

4th Year – “Fulfilling the Common Good”

  • Students report on Projects for Justice and Sustainability at the Justice Summit.
  • Students provide significant leadership in concentrated learning events and in Local Action Projects, Serve & Celebrate, Service-mission trips, Justice Summit, Matthew 25, and ACT-In Road Trips.
  • Students are prepared to take the integrated service-learning of the Jewell experience into the wide and varied settings of their future.

Justice Council – this standing group includes representation from all constituencies of the campus community. The Justice Council exists as a forum for discussing issues of justice and sustainability. Emphasis is given to learning about issues and listening to various perspectives about issues. The Justice Council practices deliberative conversation and consensus resolution, allowing the community to practice such processes. The Justice Council functions in an advisory capacity within the campus community, making recommendations for actions and policies to appropriate groups. On occasion, the Justice Council may be asked by other campus groups to deliberate on an issue and bring back to that group a recommendation. The Council, and the Center, will be more effective as agents of INFLUENCE and INSPIRATION than Power and Declaration.

William Jewell Diversity Committee – The Center relates to the College’s Diversity Committee in its work of supporting and promoting institutional awareness about human diversity, implementing the College’s statement on diversity, and promoting a campus environment that is supportive of all persons.

The Center creates and nurtures a presence beyond the campus, including alumni, friends, and partners.

Social Networking
The Center serves as a regional hub for communication and activity related to justice and sustainability issues. Community supporters – individuals and organizations – comprise a membership base that joins in the work of the Center and furthers its mission. The Center maintains contact with these members and a broader network of supporters through its website, a periodic email newsletter, and social events.

Benefit Concert
The Center sponsors an annual benefit concert for young alumni and friends to celebrate the work of the Center, Kansas City non-profit organizations, and the Arts.

Funding Partners
The Center engages partners, individual and corporate, to fund the work of the Center. The Center continually seeks grant funding to support Local Action Projects.

ACT-In Road Trips are intentional service projects in urban areas (i.e., St. Louis, Denver, Chicago, Dallas) to bring together prospective students, Jewell alumni, current students, and staff. These events highlight the College’s emphasis on applied learning in the ACT-In major.
