Ambassador Mark Lagon will deliver an address as part of the Binns Lecture on the Sacred and Secular and Power and Justice in Society at William Jewell College. His lecture, titled “The Global Democracy Recession: Can We Recover?,” will start at 7:30 p.m. on March 31 at Yates-Gill College Union room 221.
Lagon rose to the role of Ambassador at Large in the U.S. State Department, directing the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons from 2007-2009. He later served as executive director and CEO of the leading anti-trafficking nonprofit, Polaris. Since then, he has served as president of Freedom House. He is also the co-editor of the recent book Human Dignity and the Future of Global Institutions.
Freedom House was founded in 1941 and was the first American organization to champion the advancement of freedom globally. The independent, nonpartisan watchdog organization provides research and studies into various aspects of freedom around the world, advocates with U.S. and international leaders for the spread of democracy, defends journalists and free expression, works to bolster women’s rights and helps to promote human rights.
