Goals for Student Learning

Graduates of William Jewell College with a major in science and technology management:
  • Develop a basic understanding of scientific principles, facts, and concepts.

  • Are literate about the scientific area of emphasis.

  • Develop expertise in the methodologies of the laboratory.

  • Think critically and creatively as scientists.

  • Rediscover and develop innate scientific curiosity.

  • Are proficient in the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of statistical data.

  • Understand fundamental economic concepts.

  • Are proficient in the measurement of financial information.

  • Understand the functions of business and management and the legal environment in which they operate.

  • Have a basic grasp of financial principles.

  • Understand the management of human behavior in the business operation.

  • Internalize the ethical and social responsibilities involved in business and science.

The major leads to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. Students must choose an area of emphasis from biology, chemistry, or physics.

The Major
Science and Technology Management

A grade of C- or higher is required in each course in the major. Students working toward a major in science and technology management who transfer credit from other institutions must satisfactorily complete in residence a minimum of 12 hours of the required courses in business and a minimum of 12 hours of the required courses in science. Courses in science that are more than ten years old will not normally be counted toward the major. Students majoring in science and technology management must complete all requirements for the BA degree.

Graduates are prepared for employment in sales and marketing in high-technology industries. Students in this program gain the knowledge and experience needed to understand the manufacture and operation of high-technology products. In addition, they have skills in marketing and organizational behavior that are necessary to operate successfully in the world of business. This proficiency in science and business, when combined with abilities in communication and leadership that are developed through a liberal-arts education, provide the background needed to progress to management-level positions. Students interested in certain health-care professions may also find this major (with an emphasis in biology or chemistry) to be especially appealing, since it combines some of the scientific prerequisites for professional school with knowledge and practical skills in business that will be useful in the profession.

A student is not permitted to major in science and technology management and to have a separate major in business or to have a separate major in the area of science that is emphasized within this program.
