What is SIFE?

Students in Free Enterprise is an international non-profit organization, based in Springfield, Mo., that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize college students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible leaders.

The Jewell SIFE team has been active since 2004 and has achieved national ranking consistently since 2005. Each year team members from majors across campus discipline areas identify needs in the community that they can affect with positive change. They focus on cause-oriented projects that result in making the world a better place by empowering those people in need.

Project K-9
When the Clay County Sheriff’s Department needed to purchase a canine deputy for drug enforcement, the SIFE Team developed a grassroots marketing plan to sell $10 shares to area residents and businesses. They raised $15,000 for the county to purchase the dog at no cost to taxpayers. Matty, a Belgian Malinoise, joined the force in June 2010 and helped officers make a drug bust on his first day.  Watch Video

Money Farm
In its third year, Money Farm was named the No. 2 SIFE Financial Literacy Program in the country in 2009 and the No. 3 program in 2010. Jewell’s SIFE members – business, accounting and education majors – developed curriculum on spending, saving, donating and investing. Last year, they spent several hours a week for four weeks in elementary schools, teaching 1,460 students the fundamentals of financial health. A partnership with the Liberty, Mo., M&I Bank allows students to receive a free bank and $20 to open a savings account. To date, the project has tracked more than $47,000 in formal savings by elementary students.
