William Jewell College's Department of Music and the Center for Justice and Sustainability announce a choral composition competition. We are seeking submissions with a text that speaks to issues related to the mission of the Center, which states:
William Jewell College establishes the Center for Justice and Sustainability in order to develop in its students the commitment, competence, and confidence to address significant societal, economic, and ecological challenges facing society.
The composition should be for SATB choir (SSAATTBB possible at times – short solo sections from within the choir are permissible). The work may have been previously performed but should not be published. The winning composition will be performed by the college choirs at a summit to be held on the campus of William Jewell College on January 15-16, 2010. The winning composer will be expected to be in residence for the summit and to give a Masterclass to composition students from William Jewell and possibly other local colleges/universities. The composer should also be prepared to address the summit in a plenary session regarding the submitted composition and the role of the arts as a voice for justice and/or sustainability. Please include a short statement (1000 words or less) with your application outlining the general content of this statement.
The winner will be awarded $1,500 and expenses related to attendance at the summit will be covered by the Center.
Send three copies of the score and three copies of a recording (Live or MIDI) to the address below postmarked by August 15th, 2009. Submitted compositions will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary panel and the winner will be notified by October 31st, 2009.
