Facilities of the Department of Chemistry

The modern White Science Center, completed in 1992, offers a well-equipped environment in which to study science. At Jewell, equipment is available for both coursework and independent study; you'll jump right in and conduct experiments. You'll do science! What's more, in-class instruction using computers and lab equipment allows technology to be integrated with new teaching methods in the classroom setting.  In addition to laboratories used in conjunction with courses, chemistry and biochemistry majors work in five different undergraduate research labs in which students work in research teams facilitated by faculty members.

Examples of equipment in the chemistry department:

Atomic absorption spectrometer
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer
Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer
Mass spectrometer coupled with gas chromatograph
Isocratic high-performance liquid chromatograph
Scanning UV-Visible spectrophotometer
Dual-processor UNIX workstation equipped with molecular-design software
