Jewell Debate traveled to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City for the two largest invitational tournaments of the year. Competing against over 100 teams, the duos of senior Spencer Shanks and senior Tyler White, junior Stephen Ahal and senior Rosemary Loehr, and junior David Hansen and junior Katelyn Johnson advanced to elimination rounds at both tournaments.
At the second tournament, Shanks and White advanced to the championship round to secure a second-place finish. As a school, Jewell earned the No. 2 spot, ranking above schools including UCLA, University of Oregon, UC-Berkley and NCAA Division II rival McKendree University.
The debate squad won the Webster University tournament in Webster Groves, Mo., for the fourth consecutive year. Ahal and Loehr won the championship round, claiming the title for the second year in a row. Also making elimination-round appearances were Shanks and White, Hansen and Johnson, and first-years Damon Brown and Alex Holden. Five Jewell debaters were named in the top 10 speakers with Brown placing third.
