Debbie McElwain Walk/Run set for March 24

January 30, 2007

The William Jewell College Student Senate, in conjunction with the college’s Alpha Gamma Delta chapter and the Kansas City Special Olympics, invites alumni and friends of the college to participate in the 3rd Annual Debbie McElwain Walk/Run.

The event will take place March 24 on the William Jewell College campus in Liberty, Mo., with a scheduled 5K run and a one-mile walk. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with a $20 entry fee payable on the day of the event. Proceeds benefit the Kansas City Special Olympics.

Debbie McElwain was a Macon, Mo., resident and William Jewell student majoring in early childhood education who died in an automobile accident in 2004. Debbie’s passion for working with children with special needs came as a result of her strong relationship with her younger brother, who was himself handicapped. Upon Debbie’s passing, it was the request of her family that a memorial be established in her honor to benefit Special Olympics.

Through sports training and athletic competition, Special Olympics provides opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships for adults and children with mental disabilities and physical needs. The Kansas City Special Olympics, with the help of caring individuals in the community acting as coaches, helps to develop these skills through events such as bowling, dodgeball, basketball, aquatics and baseball.

Registration forms for the Debbie McElwain Walk/Run can also be submitted via Active.com’s website at the following link: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1400643. Free parking is available in the commuter parking lot just inside the main campus entrance at Mill Street and R.E. Bowles Drive or in the Mabee Center for Physical Education parking lot. Events begin at 9 a.m., and an early arrival is suggested. A map of the Jewell campus can be downloaded at ../../gen/william_and_jewell_generated_pages/Campus_Map_m84.html
