Hall Family Foundation awards summer grants

The Hall Family Foundation’s Summer Academic Enrichment Program will send five William Jewell College students on academic enrichment experiences in the United States, China, Scotland and South Africa.

Recipients received individual awards of up to $5,000 to seize academic opportunities and prepare for post-graduate experiences. The Hall Family Foundation Summer Academic Enrichment Program is unique to William Jewell, providing financial support for opportunities not typically available on campus, such as study abroad, workshops, intensive summer courses, conferences, programs in the student’s field of study and research opportunities at other institutions.

Jewell students receiving Hall Family Foundation Summer Academic Enrichment Grants include:

Annette Dauster, a speech and theatre education major from Liberty, Mo., will direct a show based off the original “Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Anderson at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, the largest theatre and arts program in the world. Dauster is currently completing field work at Winnetonka High School in Kansas City North, working as a technical director. The Hall grant will allow Dauster and her Winnetonka students to participate in multiple performances at the festival, promote their show, network and experience other companies’ performances. Additionally, Dauster plans to collaborate with Jewell junior Spencer Williams to compose original music for the performance.

Karlee Friend, an elementary education major from Lake Ozark, Mo., will attend the University of Michigan Elementary Mathematics Laboratory with Dr. Jeanine Haistings, Jewell associate professor of education. Friend will observe the classroom of Dr. Deborah Loewenberg Ball, an internationally renowned elementary educator who has co-authored over 150 publications and made numerous worldwide appearances. Friend will analyze how Dr. Ball plans and carries out instruction in a classroom setting for adaptation in her career goal as an elementary education teacher and school administrator. 

Mary Luber, a nonprofit leadership and psychology major from Camdenton, Mo., will travel to Cape Town, South Africa, to participate in the Council on International Education Exchange Summer Community Development and Social Justice Theory and Practice program. The program educates students on the fragile framework of post-Apartheid South Africa and its effect on community development. While residing in the Cape Town urban core, Luber will serve the surrounding community and study the Afrikaans language. She also plans to embark on a photojournalism project while abroad in order to educate Jewell students about the conditions in South Africa upon her return.

Sarah Reed, a vocal performance major from Overland Park, Kan., will participate in a two-week American Bach Soloists program at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. With a focus on early and baroque style music, the program allows advanced musicians and students to work alongside well-known professors who specialize in specific disciplines. Reed will pursue work in the genre of early and baroque music after graduating.

Jamie Wallen, a political science, international relations and Applied Critical Thought and Inquiry major from St. Charles, Mo., will travel to China to work with Global Children’s Vision, an organization dedicated to helping neglected children throughout the world. Wallen will complete a four-week language immersion program followed by a 10-day nonprofit volunteer event with Global Children’s Vision, bringing relief to left-behind children in the Sichuan Province. She aspires to become a human rights advocate for women and children in China who are victims of sexual abuse.
