The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, widely regarded as one of the world's greatest folkloric companies, performs at 8 p.m. Friday, February 2, at the Folly Theater (12th and Central Sts.) in downtown Kansas City, Mo. Both pageantry and authenticity abound as this marriage of modern theatre techniques and centuries-old traditions in music and dance unfolds. The Ensemble's first Kansas City appearance is presented by the Harriman-Jewell Series.
Founded in 1951, the company mission has been to collect and play original folk music, and to preserve the Hungarian dances and costumes by putting them on stage. The Ensemble has achieved its original aim, thereby revitalizing the culture of its people through the rich and colorful repertoire that is performed worldwide. The Ensemble's choreographies are all based on authentic dances, some of them were collected in isolated villages with dance elements that date back hundreds of years.
The extraordinary folk music that inspired international classical composers such as Liszt, Bartók and Kodály, is put on stage by both the Folk Orchestra and the world-famous Gypsy Orchestra. The members of the Folk Orchestra play traditional instruments and perform the Hungarian folk music at its highest artistic level. The famous Gypsy Orchestra plays both dance accompaniments and performs alone.
Tickets to Hungarian State Folk Ensemble performance are $55 or $25; please call the Harriman-Jewell Series at 816-415-5025 (or toll free at 888-528-5521). Tickets and event information are also available at www.harriman-jewell.org. The Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation sponsors this downtown Kansas City performance.
Now in its 42nd season, the nationally recognized Harriman-Jewell Series brings acclaimed performers from the worlds of music, dance, and theatre to Kansas City’s downtown venues. In addition to the performances, an Education Series offers free master classes and lectures to allow area community members and students to view artists in an informal setting. Peterson’s Smart Parents Guide to College cites the Series as a prime example of how small colleges “can become centers of culture for an entire region.”
