The Jewell Artist Series concludes its inaugural season at William Jewell College with a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 28 in John Gano Memorial Chapel on the campus in Liberty, Mo. The public is invited to attend; no tickets or reservations are required.

Soprano Suzanne Hatcher, assistant professor of music and Director of Vocal Studies at William Jewell, will be joined on piano by Calvin Permenter, the Robert H. McKee Professor of Music. The program includes “Mein Herze stimmt in Blut,” BWV 199 of J. S. Bach, vocalizes by Russian composers including the famous “Vocalise” by Sergei Rachmaninoff, “Chanson Grises,” a cycle of Cabaret-type French songs by Reynaldo Hahn, and lieder by Romantic German composer Joseph Marx.

“It’s quite an eclectic program, and one that allows me to explore many different styles of singing and interpretation,” says Dr. Hatcher. “I am also thrilled to have another opportunity to collaborate with Calvin, who brings a fresh and different perspective to our music-making. Our discussions about style and interpretation really keep me on my toes.”

Regarding the program, Dr. Permenter says: “The repertoire is not only extremely challenging, it is also a rewarding opportunity to work again with Suzanne. It is not very frequently that I am able to collaborate with artists on music of this caliber. The music-making is the ultimate reward.”

Dr. Hatcher received her B.A. from California State University; her M.M. from Rice University; and her D.M.A. from the University of Miami. She joined the William Jewell faculty in 2006. Dr. Permenter received his B.S. from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music; his M.M. from Drake University; and his D.M.A. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He has completed additional study at the American Conservatory of Music in Fountainebleau, France, and the Academie Ravel de Musique in St. Jean-de-Luz, France. He joined the William Jewell faculty in 1980.

Following the concert there will be a reception hosted by the Ladies of Sigma Alpha Iota, Gamma Psi chapter, where audience members can meet the artists.

Faculty of the William Jewell College music department are joined by distinguished alumni and friends in the new Jewell Artist Series.
