The American Humanics Nonprofit Leadership chapter at William Jewell College has received the Sprint Corporation Foundation Nonprofit Program Excellence Award, a national award recognizing the top Nonprofit Leadership program at U.S. colleges with American Humanics affiliation.

“This is the equivalent of a national championship,” said Kevin Shaffstall, Director of the Fred and Shirley Pryor Center for Leadership Development at William Jewell. “We were competing with about 70 other colleges and universities, and this is the highest award given at American Humanics’ annual National Nonprofit Leadership Conference. It was nice to see our students on the big stage receive this recognition in front of about 800 people from national nonprofits, foundations and colleges. We are very excited about our students’ accomplishments.”

Competitors included American Humanics student chapters representing major institutions such as Arizona State, Indiana University, Seton Hall University, University of Houston, University of Oklahoma, Kansas State University, University of San Diego and others. The award was presented by Ralph Reid, Executive Director of the Sprint Foundation, during the January 6 closing awards ceremony of the American Humanics Leadership Institute at the Downtown Marriott in Indianapolis, Ind.

American Humanics, founded in Kansas City in 1948 by then-Mayor H. Roe Bartle, is a national alliance of colleges, universities and nonprofit organizations dedicated to educating, preparing and certifying professionals to strengthen and lead nonprofit organizations.

The Sprint Foundation is the sponsor of the Program Excellence Award for the Top National American Humanics Nonprofit Leadership Program. The Program Excellence Award is based on demonstrated accomplishment, performance and excellence over the past year by participating colleges and universities in the following areas: hours of volunteerism, impact of community service initiatives, nonprofit leadership academic excellence and rigor of study, fundraising best practices, student recruitment, placement of students in internships and jobs and overall program sustainability.

The American Humanics Management Institute is an intensive educational symposium established by American Humanics in 1973. The Nonprofit Leadership institute provides the capstone experience in nonprofit management and leadership education. Local and national nonprofit leaders present issues pertinent to professional leadership and engage participants through workshops, dialogue, forums and case studies. The unique, interactive format of the Institute exposes the next generation of nonprofit leaders to the realistic experiences of a nonprofit organization.
