Following a semester of competition, two Jewell debate teams earned first round bids to the 2014 National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence to be held at Northern Arizona University.
Spencer Shanks, a senior from Kearney, Mo., and senior Tyler White of Independence, Mo., beat out over 500 teams nationwide to secure a No. 7 ranking. The duo ended the semester with a second-place finish at the Washburn University tournament in Topeka, Kan.
Stephen Ahal, a junior from Chesterfield, Mo., and senior Rosemary Loehr of Kansas City, Mo., also received bids after finishing the semester as the No. 17 team in the nation.
Both teams rank above competitors from institutions such as the University of Missouri, California-Berkeley and Loyola-Chicago.
The debate squad will resume competition in January at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
