The William Jewell College Debate Squad started 2010 with a strong performance at Texas Tech University January 16-18. Sophomores David Dingess (Aurora, CO) and Andrew Potter (Buhler, KS) qualified for the awards bracket in both tournaments and finished in the top 16 teams. Dingess won speaker awards at both tournaments, including 7th speaker out of over 200 competitors. Potter received 10th speaker. In the awards bracket, Dingess and Potter defeated the University of Wyoming before narrowly losing to top-ranked Southern Illinois University.

“This was an excellent performance for this team and it situates them well for a fine showing at nationals later this semester,” said Dr. Gina Lane, Director of Debate. First year Heather Swadley (Shawnee, OK) and sophomore Abby Thomas (Columbia, MO) qualified for the awards bracket at both tournaments and finished in the top 32 teams, defeating teams from Rice University and Hillsdale College in the awards bracket. Also competing were sophomore Nichole Latimer (Yankton, SD) and first year Kyle Mellon (Norman, OK), who qualified for the awards bracket in the first tournament. First year Matt Reisener paired with a Drury University debater.

The tournament improved the national rankings of all three teams, putting them in the top 10% of all competing parliamentary teams nationwide. Although the final bids for the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence will not be finalized until the end of February, Lane believes all three teams will receive bids. “The NPTE recognizes the cream of the crop by inviting the top 64 teams in the nation to compete in March. Based on their performance so far, I expect that we will receive three bids to this tournament, which is quite impressive for a squad of first and second year students,” said Lane. Currently, Swadley and Thomas are the highest-ranking team for Jewell, finishing this week as 28th in the nation.
