Two students have been awarded the 2011 Pritchard Humanitarian Service Award at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.

Victoria Litardo, a junior nonprofit leadership and Spanish major, will intern this summer with New Roots for Refugees, a Kansas City nonprofit organization that provides agricultural resources for area refugees.

Her internship will focus on assisting farmers with improved marketing and business strategies. The Pritchard Award will allow Victoria to create profile cards for farmers to keep at their business stands on Saturday mornings. Consumers receive a profile card with each purchase, helping connect producer and consumer.

“My hope for this project is to slowly weed out the ignorance that exists in the process of our daily consumption so we are able to stop, think and appreciate the things we purchase and the people who make that product available,” Victoria said. She has taken mission trips to Honduras and served with Cherith Brook Catholic Worker House in Kansas City, Mo.

Cassidy Miller, a junior nonprofit leadership major, has a summer internship with Rainbow Network, a faith-based organization working to end extreme poverty in Nicaragua through housing, health care, education, micro finance and sustainable agriculture. Cassidy will evaluate and expand the gift-in-kind program to help increase the Rainbow Network’s ability to serve communities in need.

Cassidy spent the fall semester in Central America, mainly in Nicaragua. “I have a very strong passion for the nonprofit sector and my semester abroad sparked an interest in doing international nonprofit work in Latin America,” she said. Cassidy has completed internships with Community Blood Center of the Ozarks; Love, INC. Thrift Store in Liberty; and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks in Springfield. Currently she is the communications and development intern at Nonprofit Missouri, a state alliance organization. In addition, she has volunteered locally as a tutor for Burmese refugees through Grace Baptist Church and at an after school program at Iglesia Camino.

The Pritchard Humanitarian Service Award is provided by and named for John and Mary Pritchard, the founders and nurturers of Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City, a provider of affordable housing for low-income families. For more than two decades, the Pritchards sought strong and effective ways to interact with people in need. The award goes annually to William Jewell students who commit to engaging with people in need, developing relationships with people different from themselves in all fundamental aspects while learning about their own unique gifts and calling.

William Jewell College is committed to bringing together talented students and gifted faculty mentors within a vibrant community sparked by a rigorous and intentional liberal arts curriculum. A full range of personal and professional development experiences are presented by the selective national liberal arts college’s location within the Kansas City metroplex of more than two million.
