Hang (Summer) Vu has been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who will be studying abroad. Hang, a junior Oxbridge molecular biology major at William Jewell College in Liberty, will be studying at Cambridge during the 2008-09 academic year. She is the daughter of Tai and Loan Vu of Kansas City, North.

Vu is one of 700 American undergraduate students from over 320 colleges and universities across the U.S. receiving the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

Vu is a student in William Jewell’s Oxbridge Honors Program, the only program in the United States offering a full curriculum of tutorial-based instruction in conjunction with a year of study in England. This highly personalized approach to education combines the best of the British and American approaches to education.

Since the establishment of the Gilman International Scholarship Program as part of the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, more than 4,200 students nationwide have received this prestigious award.

Congressman Benjamin A. Gilman, who retired in 2002 after serving in the House of Representatives for 30 years and chairing the House Foreign Relations Committee, commented: “Study abroad is a special experience for every student who participates. Living and learning in a vastly different environment of another nation not only exposes our students to alternate views, but also adds an enriching social and cultural experience. It also provides our students with the opportunity to return home with a deeper understanding of their place in the world, encouraging them to be a contributor, rather than a spectator, in the international community.”

The Gilman Scholarship provides awards for international study for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at two- and four-year colleges and universities.
