Jewell takes second in debate sweepstakes Contact: Rob Eisele, 816-415-7574 October 19, 2010
William Jewell debaters have started their season strong with a second place sweepstakes finish at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill., October 15-17. Fifteen colleges and universities from seven states competed during the dual tournament weekend. Senior Tim Brooks and Junior Andrew Potter, currently ranked 12th nationally, placed second at the Bearcat Classic and third at the Hunsaker Invitational.
“Tim and Andrew are quickly becoming a formidable team,” said Dr. Gina Lane, Director of Debate. “They have qualified for the elimination round bracket at every tournament they have competed at together, and I fully expect that trend to continue.”
After not qualifying for the award bracket in the Bearcat Classic, sophomores Kyle Mellon and Matt Reisener finished in fourth place at the Hunsaker tournament. Mellon was named 9th overall speaker. Sophomore Tyler White and his partner, first-year Rodney Chowning, were octofinalists at both tournaments.
Jewell debaters dominated the junior varsity division of both tournaments. Every Jewell team qualified for the awards bracket. First-years Rosemary Loehr and Noah Worcester finished second at the Bearcat Classic, while Spencer Shanks, Rosemary White, Rosemary Loehr and Taylor Greene closed out the finals of the Hunsaker Classic. Lacon Smith and Noah Worcester finished in third place. Rosemary Loehr received top junior varsity speaker, David Sanchez was second, Rosemary White received third and Spencer Shanks received 5th place.
“I am pleased with the progress of our first-year debaters,” said Lane. “They are all ready to move up to the open division, and I am looking forward to see how they handle the tougher competition.”
Jewell’s next tournament will be October 29-31 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
