The Department of Music at William Jewell College will present two one-act operas at 7:30 p.m. November 9 and 10 in John Gano Memorial Chapel on the campus in Liberty, Mo. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend; tickets or reservations are not required.

The Impresario, by Mozart, is a one-act comedy about a fledgling promoter who is introduced to dueling divas, one in the twilight of her career, the other in the early, novice years. The sopranos audition for him and compete for top-billing.

Suor Angelica comprises the second of three one-acts Puccini entitled Il Trittico, which premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918. It is a tragedy set in a convent. The plot centers on a young nun who struggles to live with the memories of her sinful past and the retribution of family, and yet finds spiritual redemption through the graciousness of the Virgin Mary.

Dr. Ron Witzke, professor of music, will direct the production. Dr. Tony Brandolino, professor of music, will conduct. Cast members from the metropolitan area include Lauren Perren of Liberty; Jon Pierson of Peculiar, Mo.; Erica Jackson of Independence, Mo.; Stephanie Dailey of Kansas City, Mo. (zip 64155); Brittany Williams and Nikki Pollman of Olathe, Kan.; Lora Williams of North Kansas City, Mo.; Caitlin Flebbe of Raytown, Mo.; and Kristen Walker of Lee’s Summit, Mo. Also appearing are Joseph Johnson of Maryville, Mo.; Cody Johnson of Benton, Ark.; Anna Eskilson of Lawrence, Kan.; Allysia Caraballo of Centennial, Colo.; Christina Pryor, Kristen Mountcastle and Sarah Ebright of Wichita, Kan.; and Meghan Griffin of Oswego, N.Y.

With its challenging academic culture and focus on student achievement, William Jewell College promises students an outstanding liberal arts education that cultivates leadership, service, and spiritual growth within a community inspired by Christian ideals and committed to open, rigorous intellectual pursuits.
