Jewell trustees announce new officers, welcome new member

The William Jewell College Board of Trustees has announced new officers in addition to confirming a new member to the governing board of the national liberal arts college in Liberty, Mo.

Beginning a new two-year term as chair is Thomas “Buzz” R. Willard, President and CEO of Tower Properties in Kansas City, Mo., and a member of the William Jewell College class of 1976. Elected to the position of vice chair was Robert K. Kirkland, president of the Kirkland & Woods, P.C., law firm in Liberty, Mo., and a member of the William Jewell College class of 1980. Serving as secretary will be Martha B. Comment, a clinical social worker in Overland Park, Kan.

In addition, Karen R. Mathes was elected to the Board of Trustees. Mathes is President and Owner of Advanced Logistics and Fulfillment, a company that assembles point of purchase displays for retail sales. She grew up in Liberty and graduated from William Jewell College in 1980 with a B.S. in nursing. Mathes worked as a staff nurse at Liberty Hospital until 1991 and later served as Assistant Director of Nursing. She and her husband, Mark Mathes, a member of the William Jewell College class of 1979, have 3 sons: Justin, Jared and Jordan. Jared is a December 2009 graduate of William Jewell. Mathes serves on the Liberty Hospital Foundation Board and is a past president. She chairs the nursing scholarship committee for the board and is also the board secretary for Boy Scout Troop 374 in Liberty.

The Board also approved the following faculty changes in rank: Dr. Tara Allen (of Kansas City North), from associate professor of biology to professor of biology; Dr. Maggie Brewer (of Liberty, Mo.), from assistant professor of physics to associate professor of physics; Liz Kessler (of Lawson, Mo.), from instructor of nursing to assistant professor of nursing; Vicki Meek (of Leawood, Kan.), from assistant professor of nursing to associate professor of nursing; Dr. Jason Morrill (of Richmond, Mo.), from assistant professor of chemistry to associate professor of chemistry; and Nichole Spencer (of Leawood, Kan.), from instructor of nursing to assistant professor of nursing.
