Jewell's Chapel Choir, Symphonic Band to perform Contact: Rob Eisele, 816-415-7574 February 12, 2007
The William Jewell College Concert Choir and Symphonic Band will perform a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. March 2 in John Gano Memorial Chapel on the campus in Liberty, Mo. The concert is free and the public is invited to attend; tickets or reservations are not required.
The Chapel Choir’s portion of the concert is themed “Penitence and Praise” to mark the season of Lent. The 60-member choir, accompanied by Dr. Calvin Permenter on piano, will perform music written from the early 17th century through 2006. As part of the concert, student conductor Nikki Pollman will conduct Edward Elgar’s “Ave Verum” in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Elgar’s birth, as well as the 120th anniversary of the composing of the work. Senior piano major Sarah Dresser will accompany that selection on organ.
Other choir selections include Allegri’s famous setting of Psalm 51; Christiansen’s arrangement of the shape-note hymn “Wondrous Love”; and John Rutter’s arrangement of “Down by the Riverside.”
Band selections will include David R. Gillingham’s concert march “Crest of Honor”; Gary D. Ziek’s “Aegean Symphony,” featuring first-year flutists Mary Jamerson and Robyn Klaus; Robert W. Smith’s “Monument”; Kabelevsky’s “Comedians Gallop,” conducted by senior Matt Hendrix; and J.C. Heeds’ “In Storm and Sunshine,” conducted by senior Katie Hiller.
