The William Jewell College SIFE team was named a Regional Champion at the SIFE USA Regional Competition held April 13, 2012 in Dallas, Texas. The event is one of 11 SIFE USA Regional Competitions being held across the United States in March and April.
“Our Jewell team came into the year facing some unexpected challenges, but the strong student leadership and efforts throughout the team enabled us to be a winning team. I am very much looking forward to seeing this team compete at Nationals,” said Linda Bell, a Sam Walton Fellow and professor of accounting at William Jewell.
William Jewell College is one of nearly 600 SIFE programs in the United States. Participating students use business concepts to develop community outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.
During this academic year, the William Jewell SIFE team organized eight projects, including the Lakota Project in Bridger, South Dakota. The Lakota Project works to improve the lives of Native Americans living in the poorest county in the United States. One initiative organized by the William Jewell College SIFE team is to enable residents to generate an income through the use of quilting, a significant part of the Lakota culture. This year a quilting machine was installed and on-site training provided about how to use and maintain the machine. By providing the quilting machine as well as teaching entrepreneurial and marketing skills, SIFE students provided the tools needed for the Lakota people to make and sell their quilts, and hopefully improve their standard of living.
“The quilting machine that we’ve installed is a highlight of the continuing hope that is being instilled in the reservation. The machine will allow women to make quilts as a source of income while embracing quilting as a Lakota cultural tradition,” said Stephanie Brown, a SIFE Member.
The culmination of the SIFE program is an annual series of competitions that provide a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. Teams compete first at the regional and national levels, then at the international level when the national champion teams from each country meet at the SIFE World Cup. As a SIFE USA Regional Champion, the William Jewell College SIFE team now advances to the 2012 SIFE USA National Exposition in Kansas City, Missouri, May 22-24.
