March 5, 2014

Kansas City Arts and Faith will host the Restoration ARTS Conference March 28-29 at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. The 36-hour gathering will encourage culture-makers and catalysts from across the nation to address “Beauty’s Role in a Broken World” as attendees consider ways in which the arts play an ever-growing role in reconciling diverse communities.

To explore the idea of beauty in a broken world, 10 artists, theologians and academics will lead breakout sessions. Makoto Fujimura, a New York City artist, writer and speaker recognized as a cultural shaper, will serve as the conference’s keynote speaker. He will discuss his painting, The Golden Sea, which he considers the “retrospective monograph of [his] career.” As a Presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003 to 2009, Fujimura served as an international advocate for the arts, engaging with decision makers and advising governmental policies on the arts.

An optional Entrepreneurial Arts Crawl through Kansas City’s blossoming arts’ scene concludes the conference at 5 p.m. on March 29. The conference is partially funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. To register or review presenters, visit www.restorationarts.net

Kansas City Arts and Faith is an organization that hosts a monthly brown bag luncheon for religious leaders and artists to discuss the intersection of art and faith.
