William Jewell College – 3 @ MidAmerica Nazarene University – 2
The William Jewell College men’s junior varsity team traveled to face a talented MidAmerica Nazarene squad on a hot and humid day in Olathe, KS. Jewell fell down 2-0 in the first stanza, before settling down and cutting the lead in half five minutes before intermission. First year midfielder Nash Waters sent a cross in from the left flank where first year forward Alec Chambers beat his defender and chested the ball past the keeper from just inside the six yard box. It was a must needed lift before halftime as Jewell only had one sub in the first frame, which went down to none after defender Ian Talbot suffered a mild concussion 20 minutes in.
Jewell came out strong in the second half, but the effort took its toll in the afternoon heat. At times the squad had to play 9-v-11 as cramps, a bloodied lip, and hurt knee plagued the Jewell players. With 25 minutes left, first year midfielder Josh Ehrhard dribbled two defenders and broke free to goal. He was tackled from behind in the box and a penalty kick was awarded. Ehrhard calmly took it and rifled his shot past the goalkeeper into the left side of the net, evening the score at 2-2. Jewell continued to possess the ball and control play. It paid off in the 81st minute as sophomore forward Prince Adu-Krow opportunistically stole a pass from a MANU defender, took two touches, and fired a shot inside the far post for a goal a 3-2 Jewell lead. The next nine minutes were intense, but the WJC backs and goalkeeper Matt Waid shut down MidAmerica to secure the win.
