Applications, Awards and Auditions

All students who wish to major in music must audition for admission to the department. This can be done at the same time as an award audition. Students who do not wish to major in music may still audition for a music award  to participate in the Department of Music  while at Jewell. Awards are competitive and are awarded based on talent.

A music award is both a reflection of a student’s achievement before coming to Jewell and also an investment in the potential achievement of that student while attending Jewell. All awards require some participation in the department, usually in the form of applied lessons for at least four semesters and membership in one or more ensembles. Students may audition on instrument(s), voice, piano or a combination.

Before auditioning students should read and follow the sequence listed below. We hold three audition days and you should plan to come to one of them if you want to audition for a music award.  For more details about the application and audition process download the Admission to the Department of Music and Music Awards Audition Information brochure.

If, at this time, you want further information about the Department of Music but are not ready to apply for an award or application, please fill in the Music Questionnaire. This allows us to get to know you and your musical background better and to answer any specific questions you might have.

Limited scholarships available after March 1

Due to the large number of students interested in auditioning for music awards we have added another audition day on Saturday, March 31

The deadline for applying is Friday, March 16.

Step #1
Apply for admission to the College by completing the Application for Admission and the Financial Aid  Talent Scholarship Application.

Step #2
Complete the Department of Music Award Application online or you may download and complete the PDF version and mail it to us. There is important information at the top of this page and in the pdf document above that you should read carefully before you apply for a music award. This includes specific dates and requirements for the music award application process.

Step #3
Once you have applied for an award audition, you will be notified of your date and time by the Department of Music.

Step #4
Once the faculty has heard all the applicants for a particular year they meet to decide who should be offered a place in our program for the next year and whose talent level warrants a music award.   These recommendations are then forwarded to the Office of Financial Aid. The awarding of a music scholarship is then part of the overall financial aid packaging process performed by the Office of Financial Aid based on the student’s assessed talent level.

Step #5
Accept your scholarship by signing and returning your Music Scholarship Contract. This contract will be mailed to you in late spring or during the summer before your arrival on campus.
