Thomas Hoenig, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, addressed challenges in the global economy as the inaugural speaker in William Jewell College’s Everett P. Truex Economic and Financial Forum.

Hoenig spoke to a crowd of media representatives, students, alumni and friends of the college at the Westin Crown Center September 26. In his remarks, Hoenig chronicled what he called a “cascading series of events” leading to the current economic crisis. “I don’t think there has been a more trying time in our financial system than there is today,” Hoenig said. “But the United States has encountered crisis before. It does still have, across the globe, the most resilient economy that is both able and willing to deal with crisis. I am confident that we will work through this.”

The new endowed lecture series focuses on finance and economics. The Everett P. Truex Economic and Financial Forum will bring one or more nationally recognized economists to William Jewell College each year. Funding for the endowed forum will be provided by the Everett Truex Trust. The late Dr. Truex was a Liberty High School graduate and a 1942 William Jewell alumnus who later returned to the college as an economics and statistics professor.

“Everett was a faithful supporter of the college and was part of a close-knit family with many strong ties to Jewell,” said Chad Jolly, vice president for advancement. “He believed strongly in the power of a liberal arts education. The endowed lecture series he has provided will provide new insights for future generations of William Jewell College students.”

Hoenig, the inaugural speaker for the Truex Forum, is president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. The bank is one of 12 regional banks in the Federal Reserve System, which is a key participant in setting national monetary policy, supervising and regulating commercial banks and bank holding companies, serving as the bank for the U.S. Government and for commercial banks, and providing other payment services to depository institutions. Hoenig directs Federal Reserve activities in the Tenth Federal Reserve District, an area that includes Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wyoming, the northern half of New Mexico, and the western third of Missouri. He is also a member of the Federal Reserve System’s Open Market Committee, the key body with authority over monetary policy.

William Jewell College is committed to bringing together talented students and gifted faculty mentors within a vibrant community sparked by a rigorous and intentional liberal arts curriculum. A full range of personal and professional development experiences are presented by the selective national liberal arts college’s location within the Kansas City metroplex of 1.5 million.
