Pre-Engineering Program in Chemistry
William Jewell College is one of a limited number of liberal arts colleges which have entered into an agreement with Washington University in St. Louis for a three-two program in engineering. After three years in residence at Jewell and two years at the Washington University School of Engineering, the student can earn both a B.A. degree from William Jewell (with a major in chemistry) and a B.S. degree in engineering. William Jewell also maintains similar plans with Columbia University in New York and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
For students who would benefit from preparation for engineering which emphasizes chemistry, the following type of curriculum is suggested as an example: - Freshman fall
- CHE 122 and lab
- CTI 104
- CTI 100
- CTI 102
- Freshman spring
- CHE 205
- CHE 206 and lab
- MAT 200
- MAT 190
- 200-level CTI course
- Sophomore fall
- CHE 301
- PHY 213
- 200-level CTI course
- LAN 114
- Sophomore spring
- CHE 302 and lab
- PHY 214 and lab
- 200-level CTI course
- LAN 211
- Junior fall
- CHE 406* and lab
- CHE 405
- MAT 201
- PED activity
- PED activity
- Junior spring
- CHE 401 and lab
- MAT 202 or 281
- CTI capstone
Details of an individual's curriculum must be worked out in consultation with the engineering program to which the student intends to apply. During the time at Jewell, the student must complete all requirements of the major and of the core curriculum. More computer programming than is available at Jewell may be advisable.
Some students choose to spread out the above requirements over four years while they take better advantage of co-curricular opportunities at Jewell. These students then go on to enter a bachelor's-level engineering program and might be said to be following a 4:2 plan.
Occasionally, students will complete a bachelor's degree from Jewell and will then find an appropriate engineering program that can be entered at the graduate level.
* CHE 406 is offered only every other fall semester (and may need to be taken in the sophomore year).
