Psychology
The department of psychology at Jewell emphasizes analysis through research and synthesis in application. Through written discourse and oral presentation, students expound upon the rich history and philosophical assumptions that are the underpinnings of psychology today. We endeavor to teach and practice the discipline in a manner that glorifies our Creator. You will study psychology within a Christian context that prizes service, understanding, compassion, and the recognition of universal truth.
You will explore major theories and empirical data of psychology, along with the opportunity to practice that knowledge in applied settings. Our field practicum program offers opportunity for first-hand experience with the mental health service system.
Professors within the psychology department are recognized as experts in their own field. Professor and sports psychologist Robert Troutwine touts 10 NFL clients including our own Kansas City Chiefs. He is instrumental in helping them determine the attributes of champions and winners. He is most instrumental, however, in helping Jewell students relate to the discipline of psychology as it relates to understanding people and their behavior.
Psychology is a good stepping stone for many careers. Many graduates of William Jewell's psychology department have gone on to graduate study in such areas as social psychology, clinical psychology and counseling. Others pursue areas such as social services, business, law enforcement and teaching. Because psychology relates to so many other fields, students may choose to combine it with another degree for a second major.
