Veterans' Education Benefits (VA)
General Information
Veterans' Education Benefits are now serviced through the Official of Financial Aid (no longer through the Office of the Registrar).  Matthew Boyd is the new Veteran's Certifying Official, and may be reached at 816-415-5974, or via email at boydm AT william.jewell DOT edu. As a courtesy, the following information will be provided on the Registrar's page for a time, as we make the transition of this position from Registrar to Financial Aid.
As a part of the Office of Financial Aid, and not a division of the Department of Veterans Affairs, we serve as a liaison between WJC students who are veterans, active duty, or military dependents and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  We assist student veterans and military dependents with the processing of VA forms required for educational benefits, advise student veterans concerning certain procedural requirements, and certify the enrollment of WJC student veterans and dependents to the Department of Veterans Affairs, when requested.  The Certifying Official's office is located at the Financial Aid counter in Curry Hall (Quad Level), Cardinal Services.
Because eligibility for education benefits is determined solely by the VA, questions regarding eligibility should be directed to the VA at or by calling 1-888-442-4551.
Apply for VA Benefits
New Students:  A new student who is a veteran or other eligible dependent of a veteran and has never used VA education benefits must apply online for GI Bill benefits through VA.  You must then submit a WJC Veterans Benefits Registration Form (from the Financial Aid Office), a copy of your VA Certificate of Eligibility stating your percentage of eligibility, along with a copy of your DD-214/NOBE, to the Veterans Certifying Official in the Office of Financial Aid.
Transfer Students:  Any student who previously received VA education benefits at another college must submit a VA Change of Program or Place of Training Form 22-1995 to VA. Please also complete the WJC Veterans Benefits Registration Form (from the Financial Aid Office), and submit it to the Veterans Certifying Official, along with a copy of your VA Certificate of Eligibility stating your percentage of eligibility, and a copy of your DD-214/NOBE.
Previously Enrolled/Returning Veterans: Any student, who has previously enrolled at WJC while receiving VA benefits, must notify the Certifying Official each semester when his/her registration is complete for the upcoming semester.
Post 9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program

William Jewell College has agreed to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, although participation is determined on an annual basis. This agreement provides for assistance to all eligible Yellow Ribbon individuals during the academic year including the summer session.
The College will provide the recipient with a tuition waiver in an amount up to 50 percent of the amount that exceeds the VA Base Rate for that academic year.  Basically, with the base amount provided by VA plus the College’s portion and VA matching component, tuition and fees may be covered in full.  It should be noted that recipients may pursue other non-institutional sources of financial aid to assist with other college-related expenses. Eligible Yellow Ribbon applicants admitted into the Accelerated Track Nursing Program (BSN-AT) qualify for this program.  
Student Veterans' Responsibilities
The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Certifying Official at WJC closely monitor the enrollment status and academic program of each student receiving VA education benefits. The student's educational benefit is based upon the number of credit hours applicable to his/her academic degree program.
Student veterans have the following responsibilities: 
  • Complete the VA Benefits Registration form and submit to Certifying Official with required Certificate of Eligibility in order to begin the certification process.
  • Notify the Certifying Official EVERY semester/term that you want to be certified as soon as you have completed registration for the upcoming semester.  Certification of enrollment must be submitted to the VA each semester, so students must request to be certified each semester to generate certification of enrollment. 
  • Register only for courses required for your selected degree, plus applicable elective courses that will apply.
  • Do not register for courses for which you have already received a passing grade/credit (even if taken at another institution).  
  • Notify the Certifying Official if you:
    (a)     change academic programs [degree, major(s), minor(s), emphasis]
    (b)     add or drop a class any time before or during the semester
    (c)     withdraw from the College (drop all classes)
    (d)     change address and/or phone number (any contact information)
    (e)     deplete your VA educational benefits (including anticipation of depletion for the upcoming semester)  
  • Maintain satisfactory progress towards your degree.
Please note:  William Jewell College is required to provide VA with grades / academic records to support certifications and to show failure to meet progress requirements without seeking prior approval of the individual veteran or dependent.
