The internationally celebrated soprano Karita Mattila sings in recital at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Folly Theater (12th and Central Sts.) in downtown Kansas City, Mo. The Harriman-Jewell Series presentation marks the soprano's Kansas City debut.

Karita Mattila is revered for the beauty and versatility of her voice and her extraordinary stage ability. Musical America named the Finnish soprano “Musician of the Year” in 2005: one of the most prestigious honors paid to classical artists.

Under conductors such as Claudio Abbado, James Levine, Sir Simon Rattle and Esa-Pekka Salonen, the lyric dramatic soprano sings in all the major opera houses and festivals of the world performing repertoire that encompasses Mozart, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner and Janácek.

Renowned pianist Martin Katz will play for the recital, marking his 25th appearance on the Harriman-Jewell Series. Katz will also lead a free vocal and piano master class at 4:35 p.m. Friday, April 20, on the William Jewell campus. Katz will work with pre-selected vocal and piano students. The public is welcome to observe the class at no cost; reservations are not needed.

Tickets to the Kansas City debut of Karita Mattila are $25 or $55; please call the Harriman-Jewell Series at 816-415-5025 (or toll free at 888-528-5521). Tickets and event information are also available at www.harriman-jewell.org. Landon and Sarah Rowland sponsor this debut recital.

Now in its 42nd season, the nationally recognized Harriman-Jewell Series brings acclaimed performers from the worlds of music, dance, and theatre to Kansas City’s downtown venues. In addition to the performances, an Education Series offers free master classes and lectures to allow area community members and students to view artists in an informal setting. Peterson’s Smart Parents Guide to College cites the Series as a prime example of how small colleges “can become centers of culture for an entire region.”
