The emerging young violinist Nicola Benedetti plays a free Discovery Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at the Folly Theater (12th and Central Sts.) in downtown Kansas City, Mo. The Kansas City debut recital presented by the Harriman-Jewell Series includes works by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy and Ravel.

This Discovery Concert is underwritten by the Miller and Jeannette Nichols Foundation. The intent behind Harriman-Jewell Series Discovery Concerts is to introduce new artists to new audiences, while eliminating a cost barrier.

Named the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year in 2004, Nicola Benedetti has captivated audiences and critics with her performances and poise, leading the London Times to call her “a shining beacon for the beleaguered cause of classical music.” She has recorded two CDs for Deutsche Grammophon; both were released in 2006.

Born in Scotland of Italian heritage, 19-year-old Benedetti began the Suzuki violin method at age four and by 10 was enrolled at the Yehudi Menuhin School in England. Benedetti currently studies privately and plays a violin crafted in 1751 by Petrus Guarnerius of Venice.

Open-seating tickets to the Nicola Benedetti recital are free; please call the Harriman-Jewell Series at 816-415-5025 (or toll free at 888-528-5521). Tickets and event information are also available at www.harriman-jewell.org.

Nicola Benedetti will talk with audience members from the stage following her recital. This post-performance conversation and other free educational events are possible through the support of the H&R Block Foundation, the Missouri Arts Council, and Harriman-Jewell Series patrons.

Now in its 42nd season, the nationally recognized Harriman-Jewell Series brings acclaimed performers from the worlds of music, dance, and theatre to Kansas City’s downtown venues. In addition to the performances, an Education Series offers free master classes and lectures to allow area community members and students to view artists in an informal setting. Peterson’s Smart Parents Guide to College cites the Series as a prime example of how small colleges “can become centers of culture for an entire region.”
