The 2012 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” names William Jewell at number 127 among the country’s top 252 national liberal arts colleges. William Jewell was ranked among colleges that focus almost exclusively on undergraduate education and that award at least 50 percent of their degrees in the arts and sciences. Williams College (Mass.) claimed the top spot in the “Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” listing in which William Jewell is ranked, followed by Amherst College (Mass.) and Swarthmore College (Penn.). The “America’s Best Colleges” issue will be on newsstands September 20.
The U.S. News college rankings group schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The magazine’s annual rankings are based on such factors as peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and high school counselor ratings of colleges. William Jewell is the only national liberal arts college in the Kansas City region.
The 2012 rankings for William Jewell College reflect an increase from 63% to 65% in graduation rates; from 67% to 70% in percentage of classes with under 20 students; and from 73% to 79% in the percentage of faculty who are full-time. William Jewell’s acceptance rate also dropped from 55% to 50%, indicating an increase in the College’s student selectivity. The U.S. News ranking is the most recent accolade received by William Jewell College. William Jewell was also named among “America’s Best Colleges” in an August ranking published by Forbes Magazine, and was listed among The Princeton Review’s “The Best 376 Colleges” for 2012. Only about 15% of the country’s four-year colleges and universities are considered for these top-tier rankings. The College was also listed among the country’s top service-oriented institutions of higher learning.
