Vagina Monologues explores issues of violence toward women and girls
Contact: Betsy Bramon
February 19, 2007

William Jewell College student Betsy Bramon will direct a production of The Vagina Monologues, to be presented at 7:30 p.m. March 3 and at 2 p.m. March 4 in Peters Theater on the campus in Liberty, Mo. Tickets are $5; contact the theater box office at (816) 415-7590.

The Vagina Monologues is a play comprised of several short stories that promote awareness of the physical and emotional violence tied to sexuality and self-identity that women face each day around the world. The play is tied to an international movement, "V-DAY: Until the Violence stops,” that raises awareness about violence against women and girls.

The play is a benefit production, with all proceeds going to Synergy Services, an organization that holistically addresses the cycle of violence with the individual, the family and the community. Synergy shelters domestic violence victims, provides crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy and education for all involved parties. T-shirts will also be sold during performances and all special events, with the proceeds going to a Jewell student who is a single mother and domestic violence survivor to help pay for court fees and childcare.

“The Vagina Monologues is a provocative piece that tells an intimate story of sex and psyche, from the women’s perspective,” says student director Betsy Bramon. “Sharing intimate experiences that many women can relate to, The Vagina Monologues gives us a whole new perspective on what can be considered socially acceptable. The play challenges its audience not to let injustice go unanswered. It offers a unique experience, generating a safe zone for people to gather together and publicly recognize and denounce the realities of sexual and domestic violence.”

In addition to the production, campus-wide educational events have been scheduled. Upcoming events include “Until the Violence Stops: WJC Speaks” at 6 p.m. Feb. 20 in John Gano Memorial Chapel. William Jewell College survivors of sexual and domestic violence will share their stories, either in person or anonymously, and representatives from Synergy will speak about awareness and prevention.

The Vagina Monologues is being performed in over 1,000 international productions this month.
