Joyce DiDonato, Kansas City darling turned opera star, will sing, teach and talk in free public appearances on Wednesday, February 14, and Friday, February 16, on the William Jewell College campus in Liberty, Mo. DiDonato's appointment is underwritten by the Harriman-Jewell Series, the acclaimed presenting organization that began at the College in 1965.

The vivacious mezzo's public appearances begin at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14, as a soloist for the William Jewell College Chapel Service in Gano Chapel. That same day in Gano Chapel, DiDonato will lead a vocal master class of pre-selected students at 5:30 p.m. that is open for public observation.

On Friday, February 16, DiDonato will lead a public conversation at 6 p.m. in Gano Chapel, just before a 7 p.m. free screening of the filmed Paris Opera production of Handel's Hercules (DiDonato stars as Dejanira, the wife of Hercules). The three-act musical drama is sung in English. The film is 190 minutes; one 15-minute intermission is scheduled before the third act.

DiDonato's visiting artist appointment is the first of its kind for the Harriman-Jewell Series and for the College. In addition to the scheduled public events, DiDonato will offer private tutoring to vocal performance students of the College. "I treasure the chance to be a resource to young students and hope it will be a growing experience for us all," DiDonato said.

It was recently announced that DiDonato has received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for "Outstanding Achievement in Opera" for her performance in Hercules at the Barbican Center in London. She has won many respected honors, including the 2002 Richard Tucker Award, bestowed upon a single American singer annually. She placed second in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia, and has received prizes from the George London Foundation, the ARIA Awards, and the Sullivan Foundation.

Joyce DiDonato has a home in Kansas City, Mo., and grew up in Prairie Village, Kan. She has been presented in recital by the Harriman-Jewell Series twice in the last four performance seasons. The "mezzo from the Midwest" makes her "silver screen" debut at 12:30 p.m. (CST) on Saturday, March 24, as part of the Metropolitan Opera's live digital broadcast of Rossini's The Barber of Seville to theatres around the globe. Three Kansas City-area theatres will host the simulcast screenings.

No reservations are necessary for these public events; for up-to-date information call the Harriman-Jewell Series at 816-415-5025 (or toll free at 888-528-5521) or visit www.harriman-jewell.org/education.htm. Visitors to the William Jewell College campus will be directed to parking locations and Gano Chapel by campus signs and personnel. The Harriman-Jewell Series 2006-07 educational events are made possible through the support of Hallmark Cards, Inc., The Francis Family Foundation, Mid-America Arts Alliance and the National Endowment for the Arts, the H&R Block Foundation, the Oppenstein Brothers Foundation and Harriman-Jewell Series patrons.

Now in its 42nd season, the nationally recognized Harriman-Jewell Series brings acclaimed performers from the worlds of music, dance, and theatre to Kansas City’s downtown venues. In addition to the performances, an Education Series offers free master classes and lectures to allow area community members and students to view artists in an informal setting. Peterson’s Smart Parents Guide to College cites the Series as a prime example of how small colleges “can become centers of culture for an entire region.”
