Faculty Art Exhibit
The Stocksdale Gallery announces its next exhibit featuring the Biennial William Jewell College Art Faculty Exhibit. The opening reception will be held in the gallery on Sunday, January 29, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The exhibit will run through February 24 and contains the work of full-time and adjunct art faculty utilizing a variety of subject matter, media and themes.
The opening reception and exhibit are open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The gallery is located on the top floor of Brown Hall on the Jewell campus. Missouri Court of Appeals Comes to Campus
On January 31, all are welcome to attend as the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, convenes court on campus. Oral arguments will take place in Yates-Gill College Union Room 221 beginning at 9 a.m. A three-judge panel consisting of Western District Judges James Welsh, Cindy Martin ’81 and Gary Witt ’87 will sit on four of the five cases on the docket. On the fifth case, Judge Witt will be joined by Judge Zel Fischer ’85 from the Missouri Supreme Court and Judge Kenneth Romines ’65 from the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District. The cases are appeals from previously held trials in area circuit courts. The judges will take a break between cases to answer questions about the court system in Missouri, especially the appellate courts.
Senior Theatre Performance
Jewell Theatre presents the comedy “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)” by Jess Borgeson, Adam Long and Daniel Singer at 7 p.m. February 3 and 4 in Peters Theater (Brown Hall). All seats are $5; the box office opens at 6:30 p.m. on performance nights.
The production is a senior theatre project by Karina Bielecki. The play is a comedic effort by three actors to condense the entirety of Shakespeare’s works into a single performance. “Whether you love Shakespeare or hate him, the show is guaranteed to entertain,” Bielecki said. Smith Lecture
The third lecture in the Smith Lectures in Contemporary Jewish Life and Thought will be offered on Sunday, February 19. “Questions Heaped Upon Questions: How Jews Think and Why” will explore the basic modes of Talmudic discourse and Jewish thought and how it has shaped the essence of the Jewish ethos.
Leading the Smith Lectures is Rabbi Neal Schuster, part of the clergy team at The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah, Kansas City’s oldest and largest Jewish congregation. The free lectures open to the public and will be held at 6 p.m. in the Gill Family Meeting Room of Yates-Gill. Funding for the lectures has been provided by the family of Edward and Beth Smith through the Jewish Community Foundation of Kansas City. Debbie Smith serves on the Jewell Board of Trustees.
Justice Summit
The Center for Justice and Sustainability will host its annual Justice Summit February 24-25. This year’s focus is the Village Partners Project in Honduras, featuring small group discussions led by guests from Honduras and Pritchard Service Award recipient presentations. Achievement Day
William Jewell's 68th annual Achievement Day Dinner will be held on Thursday, March 1. The event honors alumni who have achieved distinction in their chosen spheres of endeavor and serves as a fundraising for needs-based student scholarships. Alumni honorees for 2012 include Patricia Garrett Campbell '68, The Honorable Zel Fischer '85, Dr. Ed Leonard '79 and Dr. Steven Stites '82. Melanie (Griffin) Cline '78 serves as event chairman, and the guest speaker is Doris Kearns Goodwin, historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.
