The William Jewell College Theatre will perform “The Laramie Project” in Peters Theater November 15 through 17. Evening performances begin at 7:30 pm, with a 2 p.m. matinee on November 17. Tickets, priced at $6 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, can be purchased at the door, or can be reserved by calling the William Jewell Box Office at 816-415-7590.

On October 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old college student at the University of Wyoming, became the victim of what was widely viewed as a violent anti-gay hate crime. The city of Laramie, Wyoming, became the focus of nationwide attention. In the wake of this tragedy, a group led by writer-director Moisés Kaufman conducted over 200 interviews of Laramie residents and compiled them into a docu-drama called “The Laramie Project.”
The play premiered at the Denver Center Theatre Company in February 2000 and was then performed in the Union Square Theater in New York City before a November 2002 performance in Laramie itself. As a result of the play’s success, HBO commissioned a 2002 film of “The Laramie Project” also written and directed by Kaufman.
“Last year when Matthew Shepard’s mother Judy Shepard was on campus, she said she hoped we would do ‘The Laramie Project,’” said Dr. Kim Harris, professor of communication, who is directing the play. “I decided the timing was right for it. At the college, there are on ongoing conversations about issues surrounding sexual orientation, and this production will be a healthy contribution to those conversations.”

Harris believes the play has universal appeal. “‘The Laramie Project’ could be considered the ‘Our Town’ of the twenty-first century, because it is about an all-American town and how it faces a tragic event.”

Peters Theater is located inside Brown Hall on the college campus in Liberty, Mo. To download a campus map, go to ../../gen/william_and_jewell_generated_pages/Campus_Map_m84.html
