William Jewell College is partnering with the city of Kansas City to undertake the “Matthew 25 Project” home painting and repairs this summer in the city’s urban core.
“The mission of the Matthew 25 Project is to provide a spiritually transforming experience for students and adults as they work to improve substandard housing for residents in Kansas City’s urban core,” said Jeff Buscher, project coordinator and campus minister at William Jewell. “Participants will be mobilized and encouraged to serve with the heart, attitude and hands of Christ (Matt. 25:40)”
Project dates are June 7 to 14, with a pre-project visit set for April 26. A registration fee of $295 covers lodging in William Jewell’s residence halls, with breakfast and dinner served in the Yates-Gill College Union.
Buscher said that he expects participants will come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Workers will concentrate their efforts in the Palestine Neighborhood. “Our goal is to paint at least ten homes during the week, and we will do more if we have the participants,” Buscher said.
Participation in the “Matthew 25 Project” is limited to students who have completed the 7th grade and older.
The city of Kansas City will qualify homes to receive the work through their ongoing “Paint Program.” Residents can get application forms by contacting the Palestine Neighborhood Development Center at 816-924-7928.
Youth Group Registration information and additional project details can be found at www.matt25project.com, or by calling Jeff Buscher at 816-415-7560, or emailing buscherj AT william.jewell DOT edu
Interested participants are encouraged to attend the pre-project visit to be hosted at William Jewell College, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 26. The visit event will include a tour of the campus sleeping quarters and a trip to the work sites. The college will provide food during the pre-project visit, although travel expenses and lodging will not be provided during this visit event.
With its challenging academic culture and focus on student achievement, William Jewell College promises students an outstanding liberal arts education that cultivates leadership, service, and spiritual growth within a community inspired by Christian ideals and committed to open, rigorous intellectual pursuits.
