William Jewell celebrates 25th anniversary of Christmas tradition Contact: Rob Eisele, 816-415-7574 November 9, 2007
William Jewell College celebrates the 25th anniversary of the establishment of “The City Come Again” service at noon December 10 at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, 13th & Broadway in Kansas City, Mo. Alumni and friends of the college and all members of the community are invited to attend the free service of seasonal music and a Christmas homily by William Jewell College President David Sallee; tickets or reservations are not required.
Established in 1982, “The City Come Again” was the idea of Daniel Lambert, then a vice president at William Jewell and later president of Baker University.
“The basic idea was for William Jewell to offer an early Christmas gift to our city—a gift of music and word and worship,” recalls Dr. Gordon Kingsley, president of William Jewell College from 1980 to 1993 and now principal at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England. “The late J. Earl Cavanaugh, dean of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, expressed his remarkable expansiveness and openness by accepting the idea. And the rest, as they say, is history. From the beginning, the cathedral has been packed full for each service, and so the gift has been appreciatively received.”
The Christmas service includes performances by William Jewell’s Handbell Choir and Concert Choir, in addition to a holiday homily offered by President David Sallee. The service is approximately one hour in length, allowing members of the downtown business community to attend during the lunch hour.
The title of the service is borrowed from a line in Robert Frost’s poem, “Christmas Trees”:
He proved to be the city come again To look for something it had left behind And could not do without and keep its Christmas.
With its challenging academic culture and focus on student achievement, William Jewell College promises students an outstanding liberal arts education that cultivates leadership, service, and spiritual growth within a community inspired by Christian ideals and committed to open, rigorous intellectual pursuits.
