Mary Sallee, wife of William Jewell College president David Sallee, and Joy S. Steincross, a member of the William Jewell College Board of Trustees, have been named the 2007 recipients of the Anne Robb Townsend Award honoring Northland women. Sallee was recognized for her philanthropic efforts, and Steincross was recognized for her business endeavors. The award is named in memory of Anne Robb Townsend, mother of newspaper publisher Harold G. Townsend, Jr. It is presented annually by Kansas City-based Townsend Communications, Inc.

Mary Sallee is an active partner with her husband, President David Sallee, as an ambassador to alumni, friends and the larger community on behalf of William Jewell College. A mathematics graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University, she taught junior high school mathematics for three years and spent several years supervising and teaching in the computer lab at Oklahoma Baptist University. She was also actively involved in a turn-of-the-century hotel restoration project in downtown Decorah, Iowa. At William Jewell, Sallee is the campus advisor for the senior honorary society Mortar Board, and in 2006 was one of four recipients nationwide to receive the organization’s Excellence in Advising Award. Her community involvement includes serving on the Board of the Northland United Way Services and on a bi-state board for YouthFriends, a school-based mentoring program. In 2006 she served as tri-president of The Harvest Ball, a philanthropic organization that raises funds for charities in the Northland. The Sallees have two sons: Andrew and Patrick.

Joy Steincross is a graduate of the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala., where she received her B.M.E. degree. She has taught high school choral music and private piano, in addition to serving as a professional accompanist and vocal coach. Steincross currently serves as pianist and staff accompanist at Woods Chapel United Methodist Church in Lee’s Summit, Mo., and as the resident pianist at Webster House in Kansas City, Mo. She is a professional pianist, and for 10 years served as the resident pianist at Nordstrom’s department store in Overland Park, Kan. Her hobbies include tennis, snow skiing, reading and needlepoint. She joined the William Jewell College Board of Trustees in 1984 and has served as secretary-treasurer and on numerous committees. Steincross has served on the board of directors for Meals on Wheels and the Liberty Symphony. She is married to the Rev. George (Dub) Steincross, former pastor at Second Baptist Church in Liberty, Mo. They have two sons: Guy Warren (Kip) and Kevin.

Past recipients of the Anne Robb Townsend award with connections to William Jewell College include Anita B. Gorman, former trustee and a member of the William Jewell class of 1953; Dr. Cecelia Robinson, professor of English; Anne Sizemore, wife of former college president W. Christian Sizemore; Juarenne Hester, a member of the William Jewell class of 1955; and Shirley Pryor, a member of the William Jewell class of 1956.
