The William Jewell College Board of Trustees has approved an operating agreement with Leawood, Kan.-based Orion Management Solutions for the operation of the College’s Claycrest Golf Course in Liberty, Mo. Orion is expected to begin operating the golf course located at 925 N. Lightburne on or before March 1.

“We are confident that Orion is the right company to provide the kind of experience and the level of customer service that recreational golfers expect in today’s marketplace,” said Dr. David Sallee, president of William Jewell College. “The company is locally owned and operated and has a proven track record of operating successful golf clubs in the metropolitan area.”

Dr. Sallee noted that Claycrest will continue to serve as the home course for William Jewell’s men’s and women’s golf teams.

Orion operates the Swope Memorial Golf Course and Minor Park Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo., and the Ironhorse Golf Club in Leawood, Kan. It has also provided consulting services at several facilities including the golf course at the University of Central Missouri. The golf management company’s partners have more than 30 years of experience related to golf facility operations and have worked with 23 golf facilities throughout the United States.

“We are thrilled to join into this partnership with William Jewell College,” said Orion partner Shane Gardner. “Both Orion and William Jewell have the same goals—to provide a high quality, affordable golf experience for the customers at Claycrest Golf Course.”

Dr. Sallee said that the change in operating structure will allow William Jewell to focus on its primary mission of providing a superior liberal arts education. “The College will benefit by moving to a profit-sharing arrangement model,” Dr. Sallee said. “Guests at Claycrest will enjoy an enhanced experience with the expertise of a proven golf management organization leading our golf course operations. Both the institution and Claycrest golfers will benefit from the reorganization.”

Most golf course employees are expected to become employees of Orion as of March 1.

Gardner said that the immediate focus at Claycrest will be an increased emphasis on marketing to bring new customers in the form of leagues, tournaments and daily play. He noted that fees at Claycrest will be competitive, with twilight, evening and student fees expected to decrease, along with an expected decrease in golf cart fees.
