Deborah Smith has joined the Board of Trustees of William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.
A graduate of the Barstow School, Ms. Smith holds degrees in political science and literature from Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif., and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California-Berkeley. She was a reporter for the Associated Press and the St. Louis Globe Democrat before returning to Kansas City in 1979. She became a research analyst for Midwest Research Institute and then worked as a public relations executive for Corporate Communications Group and Jane Mobley and Associates.
Since retiring from her work in public relations and journalism, Ms. Smith has been active in a number of community and philanthropic efforts. She currently serves on the board of the Pembroke Hill School where she has been both a board officer and the head of the annual fund, raising more than $1 million each of two years. She has served as president of the boards of Youth Friends and the Wildwood Outdoor Education Center. She also chaired the marketing committee for the Community Foundation of Johnson County during her six years on that board.
Ms. Smith is married to Mark Myron, a medical oncologist with the Kansas City Cancer Centers. They have two children: Laura, 24, a deputy press secretary for U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill; and Jake, 18, a freshman at Miami University of Ohio.
