William Jewell’s Board of Trustees welcomes Barbara Atkinson

Barbara Atkinson, M.D., of Kansas City, Mo., has been named to the William Jewell College Board of Trustees. Her term on the governing board began in February.

Atkinson is the former executive vice chancellor and executive dean of the Kansas University Medical Center and former chair of pathology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She graduated Jefferson Medical College in 1974 and began her career at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine as a professor and director of the hospital’s cytopathology laboratory. She served as professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and at the MCP and Hahnemann University, then was named the Annenberg Dean of the MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

She left Pennsylvania in 2000 to join the University of Kansas School of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. In 2002, she became executive dean and vice chancellor for clinical affairs and in 2005 she became the School’s first female executive vice chancellor.

In 2010, Atkinson was appointed by President Obama to the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. She has received multiple awards for her outstanding work in the medical community, published and edited books and articles and has been a member of numerous professional organizations, including being elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1997.
