December 2016 Grad Candidates: Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 13th, 7:00 pm – the December Grad Celebration to be held in your honor – and be sure to invite your family and friends. The brief ceremony will be in Gano Chapel, followed by a reception in the Atrium of Yates-Gill Union. This is not a cap-and-gown ceremony and does not replace Commencement exercises. December grads are invited and encouraged to participate in our official Commencement Ceremony on May 13, 2017, which includes the previous December grads along with May and July candidates for graduation.
Commencement: The 2017 Commencement Ceremony will be on Saturday, May 13th, 1:00 pm, in the Mabee Center. Several activities are scheduled throughout the day beginning with a Baccalaureate service at 9:00 am. More information regarding Commencement will be posted soon, including instructions for grad candidates and the schedule for the day.
Applying for Graduation: Students are expected to apply for graduation when they reach 75 completed hours, in order to be properly tracked by the Office of the Registrar. An Application for Graduation must be completed online to be submitted electronically to the Office of the Registrar. Students planning to graduate in May, July and December 2017 should have applied for graduation by now. Seniors who have not applied for graduation will not be cleared to enroll in a required CTI Capstone course, and will not be included in the distribution of information to grad candidates. Students who change their anticipated graduation date must re-apply for graduation by submitting a new online Application for Graduation.
Grad Fair / Regalia / Announcements: Grad Fair 2017 (for May and July 2017 grad candidates) will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, in the Bookstore Lobby, of Yates-Gill Union.
This is a “one-stop shop” for all grad candidates to “take care of business” in preparation for leaving WJC. Commencement regalia will be available for rental in the bookstore starting that day. Various offices will be represented for students to handle final details as they approach graduation, such as confirmation of diploma name, mailing address, financial aid/business office matters, registration with Alumni, purchase of announcements, rings, and other graduation-related items. The process takes about 30 minutes to complete, and students may come at their convenience throughout the day. Stay tuned for specific Grad Fair information at the beginning of the Spring semester. Grad candidates will receive email notifications about the event as well.
Academic Regalia Policy and Info: Grad candidates who walk at Commencement are required to rent their regalia through the Campus Bookstore. Academic regalia includes mortar board cap, gown, and bachelor’s hood (or master’s hood) in a specific style and a red tassel to keep. High school regalia or borrowed regalia will not be allowed. Regalia for each May Commencement is available for rental only at WJC’s Campus Bookstore, beginning on the day of the Grad Fair in March. (Students must be either a previous December graduate or listed as “on track to graduate” in May or July to rent regalia.)
For questions regarding Commencement, eligibility for graduation, etc., contact Karen Weatherford in the Office of the Registrar.
