William Jewell College is pleased to salute the following distinguished alumni, who will be recognized during Homecoming festivities October 13.

Distinguished Alumni Service Award

Recipients shall have exhibited meritorious service to the Alumni Association and through their actions shown evidence of loyalty to the College.

Dianne Jeter Shumaker ’66

Although Dianne was initiated into Beta Sigma Omicron, she later joined Zeta Tau Alpha, where she was the service chairman. She also served as the vice president of the Young Women’s Auxiliary and as president of the Women’s Recreation Association. Dianne was a member of the Campus Union Activities Committee, Greater House Council, Religious Focus Week Committee and Tatler Revue. She initiated the Shumaker Challenge, which encouraged greater alumni participation in supporting the Jewell Fund.  Dianne is an active community volunteer and a committed philanthropist. She has a son, Eric, and a daughter, Megan. 

Rev.  Jack DeWees ’72

While at William Jewell, Jack was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, Inter-Fraternity Council, CUA committee, Alpha Psi Omega and the William Jewell Players. He also competed in football and intramurals. Jack served as the president of the College Theatre organization and co-chairman of the Tatler Revue. He recently relinquished his long-time position on the Cardinal Club board and has been heard for a number of years as the public address announcer for all Jewell football games. Jack serves as pastor for the Zion United Methodist Church in St. Louis, Mo., and is a member of the Missouri Conference. His wife, Jane, is a member of the William Jewell class of 1970. They have two sons: Jack ’96 and James. 

John F. Truex Lifetime Alumni Service Award

Recipients shall have exhibited throughout their lives meritorious service to the Alumni Association and through their actions shown evidence of significant loyalty to the College. This award honors lifetime contributions of service and is therefore reserved for alumni who graduated nearly 50 years ago or more.

Rev. Harland Ginn ’48

Harland was a member of the Independent Society, the Ministerial Association, Alpha Zeta Pi and Baptist Student Union while he was a student at William Jewell. He served as a dedicated member of the Alumni Board of Governors and on the Religion Commission, in addition to his volunteer service during the tornado recovery effort of 2003. Harland is a retired minister, having served most recently at Winnwood Baptist Church. He holds a Bachelor of Divinity from Central Seminary in Kansas City, Kan. Harland’s wife, Frances, is a member of the William Jewell class of 1980. They have four children: Liz ’75, Rebecca, James ’80 and Martha ’82.
