Two hundred and seventy expectant travelers began their individual Jewell journeys August 29 as the most talented first-year class ever admitted to William Jewell College arrived to begin the 2008-2009 academic year (see sidebar). The first steps on the journey were taken around the verdant quadrangle, where faculty, staff, parents and fellow students gathered to applaud and share in the sense of discovery and expectation that marks this Jewell tradition.

College x 3
For the first time in the 159-year history of William Jewell College, identical triplets are part of the college’s entering first-year class.

(From left) Mike (Michael) Orr, Andy (Andrew) Orr and Danny (Daniel) Orr are members of the class of 2012. The Orr brothers are from Park Hill High School in Kansas City, North. Although they share the same birthday, each brother has individual interests.
Andy, who was the first to decide on Jewell, will be pursuing a major in biology. He hopes to follow the career paths of his parents, Robert and Michelle, who are physicians. Mike—the firstborn—is a pre-engineering student and computer wiz. Dan boasts a creative streak along with his flowing, European-inspired hairstyle, and he’s hooked on the “adrenaline rush” he gets from performing. Vocal music is his first love, but he also plays guitar, accordion and bagpipes. He’s even volunteered to teach bagpipe lessons at Jewell.
The Orr brothers, who have an older brother and sister, live on separate floors of their first-year residence hall at Jewell. Andy is rooming with a friend from Park Hill, but Mike and Dan have out-of-state roommates. The brothers say they are looking forward to making new friends at Jewell. |
