Jewell student Edwon Edwards has been named to Missouri
Governor Bob Holden’s Youth Cabinet, a body created
to increase involvement of young Missourians in state
and local issues. The Youth Cabinet represents the highest-level
youth advisory council formed by any state.
Holden formed the cabinet so that young people could
voice their ideas about how to make Missouri a better
place. “The Youth Cabinet members have each been
assigned to a department director, based on their areas
of interest,” Holden said. “The Youth Cabinet
members will work directly with my cabinet members to
open a dialogue between the young people and the decision-makers
of the state.”
Edwards, a first-year political science major from
Kansas City, Mo., has been assigned to the Missouri
Department of Insurance, where he works with Jewell
alumnus Scott Lakin ’80.
“The governor’s Youth Cabinet is a great
chance for students interested in politics to get involved,”
Edwards said. “Youth Cabinet members are placed
in all of the departmental offices in Jefferson City
and are instrumental in providing information to the
department heads on young people between the ages of
18 and 25. I think it is a success, and I plan on being
involved in it as long as I can.”
The William Jewell College 2002-2003 Mortar Board
Chapter was one of only 34 chapters nationwide to receive
the Silver Torch Award.
Jewell students and faculty braved the rain this fall
to participate in the National Conference for Community
and Justice’s Walk As One Walk-a-thon. NCCJ sponsors
diversity programs dealing with bias, bigotry, discrimination
and racism.
The students of Dr. Rebecca Folsom, Associate Professor
of Music, have competed in several events in the past
few months. Three students participated in the tri-state
National Association of Teachers of Singing competition
which involved singers from Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois.
Joshua Lawlor placed first and Matthew Gladden placed
second in division 2 (freshmen men), while Justin Greene
placed second in division 8 (senior men). In addition,
four students participated in the Missouri Music Teachers
Association competition. Justin Greene and Josepha Haden
both were named Honorable Mention.
Students from Assistant Professor Debbie Scarfino’s
“International Business: Global Viewpoint”
class were featured in a photo contained in a recent
newsletter from New Zealand-based Douglas Pharmaceuticals.
Students spent 12 days in New Zealand last summer attending
seminars and visiting various international businesses.
Cardinal debaters continue to receive high national
rankings in parliamentary debate. At press time, the
squad was ranked 28th out of 213 colleges and universities,
and was second in Missouri only to Truman State University.
In team rankings, sophomore Phil Fuhrman and first year
Luke Landry are still 20th in the nation out of 600
teams, and hope to receive a bid to attend the prestigious
National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence. Every
year the NPTE offers bids to approximately 48 teams
based on their national rankings. To see the entire
rankings, visit the NPTE website at http://npte.debateaddict.com.
The Cardinal debate team began 2004 on a high note.
Following a successful fall season in which Jewell debaters
qualified for the elimination rounds of every tournament
at which they competed, the squad traveled to St. Louis
for the first tournament of the spring semester, which
was hosted at Webster University. Three Jewell teams
were 4-2 in preliminary rounds and qualified for the
quarter-final elimination bracket. Of those teams, first-years
Colleen Montgomery and Lilia Toson defeated teams from
the University of Missouri and Hillsdale College before
taking second place to top-seeded Purdue University.
Finishing in the top ten speakers were Toson at 9th
place and first-year Luke Landry at 3rd. The squad also
competed in Extemporaneous Speaking, and sophomore Kevin
Garner received 5th. The Jewell debaters received 3rd
place in squad debate sweepstakes.
Before classes began in January, the squad hosted
the first William Jewell College Round-Robin Championship
for the Kansas City area Urban Debate Leagues. Each
school was asked to bring their top two debate teams
to the one-day tournament. Lincoln Prep won the tournament,
closing out the final round.
