This issue of Achieve
celebrates the 30th anniversary of Jewell’s overseas
study programs. From humble beginnings at Harlaxton
College in the fall of 1973 to the nationally
acclaimed Oxbridge Honors Program, overseas study
options for Jewell students have expanded dramatically,
particularly in England. Rob Eisele, editor of
Achieve and Jewell’s Director of Communications,
journeyed back to the British Isles (he taught
for a semester at Harlaxton in 1996) for a glimpse
of how Jewell’s programs and students are faring
today.
We are also taking this opportunity to clarify
the issues surrounding the formal dissolution
of the relationship between William Jewell College
and the Missouri Baptist Convention. In an interview
format, President David Sallee was asked to address
a number of specific questions regarding the College’s
Christian heritage and mission, and how Jewell
approaches its future in this context. This is
an important moment in our history and Dr.
Sallee “helps set the record straight,” clearly
articulating the values and vision of the College
as we move forward. Along the way, President Sallee
helps us understand what distinguishes Jewell
as a campus of achievement that offers students
an outstanding liberal arts education within an
environment that values leadership, Christian
ideals, and spiritual growth.
Looking ahead, the summer issue takes a look
at two Jewell alums who are making a difference
in our world. One is a recent graduate who is
taking a year off to teach English in Africa;
the other is a well-established attorney who is
playing a pivotal role in the rebuilding of the
infrastructure of war-torn Iraq.
We hope you enjoy the new quarterly publication
cycle and format of Achieve. We welcome
your comments.
