Stockton Named NAIA Region
V Coach of the Year
For the second time in his three years as head
baseball coach at William Jewell College, Mike Stockton
was named NAIA Region V Coach of the Year. He received
the award at the annual American Baseball Coaches Association
convention in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 7. He also
was named Heart of America Conference coach of the
year for the second time. Athletic Director Dr. James
Redd, who attended the awards ceremony, said Stockton
is most deserving of the award. “Mike is an excellent
educator and coach who pays tremendous attention to
detail,” he said. “His teams are fundamentally
sound and play an exciting brand of baseball.” Stockton
said winning the award is due to his players. “It
makes me feel proud of our kids,” he said. “They
made it possible.” The Cardinal baseball team,
under Stockton’s leadership, had a historic year
in 2004. The team made a name for itself, winning both
the regional and conference championships and setting
a school record for wins with a record of 47-18. Four
players were named to the All-American team and two
men signed professional baseball contracts with the
Coastal Bend Aviators of Corpus Christi, Texas.
