Scholarship Recognizes Lasting Impact of Jewell Professor

At William Jewell College, professors are more than just educators.They are scholars, mentors, advisors and occasional cheerleaders who have an enduring impact on their students.

In appreciation of one such legendary Jewell professor, Jewell Oxbridge history alumna Lucy Mason has established the Kenneth B. Chatlos endowed scholarship to benefit Jewell history majors.

“I wanted to do something in Dr. Chatlos’ name because he was instrumental in my career at Jewell,” Mason says. “He was a fabulous professor, making ancient history alive, challenging and relevant. I enjoyed every one of our weekly tutorials. He was also compassionate and inspirational. He kept
me believing that I was up to the challenge of the Oxbridge program.”

Dr. Chatlos is Oxbridge Professor of History and chair of the history department at William Jewell. A Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, he joined the William Jewell College faculty in 1973. Dr. Chatlos has completed post-doctoral work at such institutions as the University of Oxford,Yale
University, the University of California at Berkeley and Vanderbilt University.

Mason graduated from Jewell with an Oxbridge history major in 1989 and is now a trial lawyer specializing in complex, high-risk product liability cases. She left Kansas City in 1998 to open the Shook, Hardy & Bacon law firm’s San Francisco office and has been trying cases throughout California since then.

Mason says that Dr. Chatlos remained in contact after graduation:“He continued to advise me after I left Jewell on career paths and options. He was a true mentor.

“And to me, he epitomizes a great scholar: full of knowledge, yet always eager to know more. He delighted in learning. So who better to name a scholarship after?”
