Personal Financial Skills

Budget counseling and restart assistance :

During the Fall 2005 semester, 3 SIFE students worked weekly as budget counselors with homeless families in the Hillcrest Ministries program to help them better understand the issues that caused them to lose their homes and correct their spending habits for future financial management success.   Budget counselors are responsible for helping residents develop weekly budgets and holding residents accountable the following week.

A team of students will also assist program directors with assessment work. They will survey program graduates to collect feedback to enhance program effectiveness and help measure training success.  I am not overseeing this – Debbie or Kelli do you know about this project?

TGIF (Teens Giving Information on Finance):

Students in 5 area high schools were surveyed about their knowledge of financial literacy matters. SIFE students have completed an analysis and compared results with a national study. The final report will be used to create a new course on Personal Finance that all students will be required to take as a condition of graduation from high school starting in the Fall of 2006.

Financial LiteracyTraining – College Students:

SIFE students will conduct three weekly training seminars for students on our campus during the month of February 2006.  SIFE students will develop and teach sessions about credit management and budgeting.  A professional speaker will teach the third session about saving and investing.  SIFE students are working on the project in conjunction with the Office of Student Affairs and local banking professionals.

Financial Literacy Training – Elementary Students:

SIFE students will develop and teach four weekly sessions focusing on financial literacy with a Christian worldview during the Spring 2006 semester.  The month-long training will be delivered to a local church.  Hillcrest residents will be encouraged to attend and transportation will be provided if needed.  Weekly topics include:  allowances and spending plans, money responsibility, saving and investing, and comparison shopping.
