Accounting
The accounting major at Jewell combines the liberal arts with skills and abilities demanded by the accounting profession. The goal of the major is to prepare you for a career in accounting or graduate studies in accounting.
Certification as a certified public accountant (CPA) is universally recognized and respected within the accounting field and is the threshold requirement for success in the public accounting profession. The CPA achieves certification by successfully passing a multi-part uniform examination (the “CPA Exam”) and accumulating experience in the practice of public accounting.
You must graduate from an accredited institution and complete a list of required academic courses in accounting and related fields to become eligible to take the CPA exam. Additionally, most states require 150 semester hours of college course work for eligibility, which exceeds the requirements for a baccalaureate degree from William Jewell (124 hours).
To obtain these additional hours, accounting students at Jewell may take a ninth semester at a reduced tuition rate. The requirements for this arrangement include applying to take the CPA and applying to this program at least two semesters prior to the ninth semester. Special dispensation is granted if you are involved in an overseas studies program or special internship opportunities.
